Home Road Cars Tyres A bespoke Pirelli P Zero R for the new official FIA F1® Safety Car, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+

Pirelli has developed the new P Zero R for the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+, recently unveiled as the first Official FIA F1® Safety Car equipped with fully variable all-wheel drive. This ultra-high-performance tyre combines qualifying-level dry handling with exceptionally precise steering response, while maintaining confident performance on wet surfaces. The P Zero R was engineered to ensure consistent performance during Formula 1® Safety Car deployments, where precision, reliability and control are paramount.

How the P Zero R was engineered: dual-compound technology, dedicated tread pattern and virtual development

Its ability to perform in both dry and wet conditions is the result of a dual-compound tread, combined with the use of virtual modelling to refine specific tread pattern details tailored to this vehicle. The tyre was co-developed with engineers in Affalterbach and further optimised using the virtual simulation tools that are central to Pirelli's development process.

The two compounds, the tread's void-to-rubber ratio and the width of the grooves were all designed to work in synergy with the vehicle's suspension geometry and camber settings. This optimises the tyre's contact patch across a range of driving conditions, delivering maximum grip, greater steering precision and enhanced high-speed stability, without compromising performance on wet roads.

Why the need for a dedicated tyre: power, all-wheel drive and load transfer management

The 21-inch P Zero R was designed to put the full output of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 to the road, delivering 450 kW (612 hp) and 850 Nm of maximum torque.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ was conceived to offer exceptional performance and drivability, aided by the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. Such a drivetrain demands tyres capable of handling rapid load transfers and maximising the car's dynamic potential.

The P Zero R meets these requirements through high grip levels, precise response and consistent performance, making it equally suited to track use.

Testing: Nürburgring, Nardò and the contribution of Safety Car drivers

The first bespoke P Zero R developed for a Mercedes-AMG underwent extensive testing at the Nürburgring and Nardò proving grounds.

Tests involved Bernd Mayländer, AMG Brand Ambassador and Official FIA F1® Safety Car Driver, together with other experienced Safety Car drivers. Their feedback highlighted the tyre's consistently high performance and outstanding grip across a broad range of conditions.

The MO1 marking and the Perfect Fit approach

In line with the Pirelli Perfect Fit philosophy, the tyre developed for the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ carries the “MO1” marking on the sidewall, identifying its dedicated development for this specific model.

Pirelli and Mercedes-AMG: a long-standing partnership

This project further strengthens the collaboration between Pirelli and Mercedes-AMG in the development of high-performance tyres. It is built on a co-engineering approach that brings together the expertise of both brands from the earliest stages of vehicle development, resulting to date in more than 150 bespoke fitments.

One recent milestone in this partnership was the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which served as the Official FIA F1® Safety Car from 2022 to 2026 and was equipped with Pirelli P Zero tyres. More recently, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+, fitted with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tyres, set a new record at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Completing the lap in 7:32.070 minutes, the four-door sports saloon secured the title of fastest vehicle in its segment on the legendary German circuit.

From Formula 1® to the road: Pirelli's innovation laboratory

The project reflects Pirelli's role in Formula 1® as the exclusive tyre supplier since 2011, a partnership recently renewed by FIA and Formula 1® through to 2028.

Pirelli's connection with Formula 1 dates back to the very first World Championship race in 1950. Over the decades, the company has accompanied the technical evolution of the FIA Formula One World Championship™, surpassing the milestone of 500 Grands Prix in 2025.

Experience gained on track, including in the most demanding conditions, continues to serve as a laboratory for innovation, with technologies and expertise transferred directly into the development of road-going tyres.
