Three new Scorpions for gravity disciplines

Black Sting, Emperor and Red Claw: these are the three tread patterns with which Pirelli Cycling completely renews its SCORPION™ range, designed to support riders from trail riding all the way to downhill racing

Home Road Bicycles Tyres Three new Scorpions for gravity disciplines

Every terrain calls for a different character. Speed and precision on firm surfaces, versatility when conditions change, and maximum control when grip becomes more challenging. This is the idea behind the new Pirelli SCORPION™ range dedicated to Gravity disciplines. Designed for everything from Trail riding to Enduro, Freeride and DH Racing, this MTB tyre family centres around Black Sting, Emperor and Red Claw, three tread patterns inspired by three different scorpion species and their natural habitats. This approach makes it easier to identify the character of each tyre and choose the most suitable set-up.

The innovation goes beyond the products themselves and also introduces a new way of navigating the different options within the range. The new selection system is based on three steps: first, the tread pattern, according to terrain and riding style; then the casing, depending on the required level of support and protection; and finally the compound, to find the optimum balance of grip, rolling efficiency and durability.

Three Scorpions, three distinct characters

Black Sting is inspired by scorpions that inhabit deserts and arid environments. It is designed for riders looking for speed, precision and responsiveness: the completely new tread pattern combines low rolling resistance with controlled braking performance and is particularly suited to hardpack and firm, compact terrain.

Emperor is the most versatile tread pattern in the range. A completely re-engineered evolution of the previous RACE M, it is the all-rounder designed for mixed terrain and changing conditions, striking a balance between traction, control and rolling efficiency.

Red Claw, inspired by tropical scorpions, is aimed at riders seeking maximum traction and control. Derived from the previous RACE T, it has been optimised for loose-over-hard conditions, dusty terrain and off-camber sections.

Four casings and three motorsport-inspired compounds

Completing the range are four casings, all eMTB Ready, making them suitable for both conventional and electric mountain bikes, whether Light eMTBs or Full Power models.

They range from the lightest ProWALL, designed for responsiveness and efficiency, through HardWALL and DualWALL, developed to offer progressively higher levels of support, protection and impact resistance, up to DH+ WALL, engineered for top-level Downhill Racing.

The three compounds, meanwhile, draw directly on Pirelli's motorsport heritage.

MEDIUM offers a balance of grip, comfort and durability and is aimed at riders seeking predictable, long-lasting performance. SOFT has been developed to provide intuitive feedback, delivering consistent grip in both dry and wet conditions without compromising durability. Designed for aggressive riding, it offers downhill-ready performance while maintaining control and longevity, even under intensive use. SUPERSOFT is the compound engineered for the most demanding conditions, offering maximum grip together with the highest levels of vibration damping and impact absorption, while providing highly intuitive and confidence-inspiring feedback that allows more experienced riders to push right to the limit. It is the highest-performing compound in terms of outright grip, in both dry and wet conditions, as well as damping performance. Ideally suited to front-wheel use, it is equally effective on the rear in racing applications and on particularly technical and demanding terrain.

Champions' experience in product development

The new range has been developed by Pirelli's technicians, drawing on years of collaboration with Fabien Barel, three-time Downhill World Champion, as well as feedback from world-class athletes across different disciplines supported by the Milan-based company, including Brendan Fairclough, Jack Moir, Thomas Genon, Juan Diego Salido, Fabio Wibmer and Lachlan Blair.

Fabien Barel commented: “Having worked closely with Pirelli, I've seen firsthand how deeply their expertise runs, from Formula 1 to the Motorcycle World Championship, from motocross to high-performance cars. That same racing DNA is now driving innovation in mountain biking – across compound technology, casing construction, and tread design. What's particularly interesting is seeing how the company is bringing into cycling that wealth of cross-discipline knowledge built up over years of success at the highest levels of motorsport. What stands out most when riding these new tyres is how consistent the grip feels across the entire tread, no matter the terrain, and how stable the casing stays even when conditions get rough – it's the kind of confidence you notice within the first few turns.”

The new Pirelli SCORPION range, featuring Black Sting, Emperor and Red Claw, is available now online and through selected cycling retailers.
