The path to F1®
Pirelli will remain as exclusive supplier to the FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 Championships until at least 2027
Formula 2 tyres
As is also the case for Formula 1, Formula 2 tyres are also designed and developed in line with precise objectives laid down by the championship organisers. In this case, the goal is to boost the careers of young drivers who might in future graduate to Formula 1. As a result, the emphasis is on performance as well as a significant but controlled level of degradation, in order to help the young drivers learn about effective tyre management.
As a result, the emphasis is on performance as well as a significant but controlled level of degradation, in order to help the young drivers learn about effective tyre management. Pirelli supplies a total of four different slick compounds: P Zero White hard, P Zero Yellow medium, P Zero Red soft and P Zero Purple supersoft. Two of these compounds are nominated for each weekend, depending on the circuit characteristics (such as tarmac roughness, corner energy and expected track temperatures). There’s also a wet weather tyre with blue markings. As has always been the case in Formula 2, the use of tyre warmers is not allowed.
Formula 3 tyres
Five years ago, Pirelli was closely involved in the development process of the new Formula 3 car and created a range of tyres especially for it. Like the Formula 2 tyres, these include an element of deliberate degradation and are designed to adapt to a wide variety of different track temperatures, speeds, and downforce levels. The Formula 3 range consists of three different slick compounds: P Zero White hard, P Zero Yellow medium and P Zero Red soft. One of these is nominated for use in each race weekend. There is also a wet-weather tyre, which has blue markings.
Tyre management is essential for Formula 3 drivers in their future careers and helps to bring talent to the fore.
