Burton upon Trent, July 11, 2012 – Pirelli has provided motorsport students from Myerscough College with competition tyres to help them on their quest to build a Ford Fiesta R2 as part of their course.

Based in Lancashire, northwest England, Myerscough College boasts seven motorsport workshops and several competition cars for the continuing development and expansion of motorsport teaching. The college believes that hands-on experience is an important aspect of learning and therefore encourages students to take part in a wide range of motorsport events throughout the UK.

The college also runs race and rally teams that compete successfully in national competitions and some of their students have even had the chance to help out on the WRC Academy: a six-round feeder series to the FIA World Rally Championship that uses Pirelli as the official tyre supplier.

As part of their motorsport course, this year Myerscough students have been given the chance to build a rally car with the support of Pirelli who were on hand to provide tyres to the college.

“Pirelli has been brilliant and provided us with Tarmac tyres for the car which has been worked on by our students since September last year,” explained Ronnie Sandham, Myerscough College’s Assistant Head of HE Motorsport.

Sandham added: “The students were second year degree students and are really proud of the car and what they have achieved. They really appreciated working with modern technology and experiencing the conversion from road car through to finished rally car. Add this to the experience that some of the students have had on the Pirelli-supported WRC Academy scheme and we have some brilliant students to put out in the workforce next July. The support we have had from the industry has been fantastic.”

Pirelli’s WRC Academy tyre engineer Matteo Braga commented: “Everything started when I met Ronnie on a WRC Academy event last year; Ronnie explained to me about their activities and asked if Pirelli could provide some support. After Wales Rally GB I was able to provide her with some tyres. The WRC Academy is the best place where young drivers and students can work with big motorsport companies including M-Sport and Pirelli. I think it is excellent that there are colleges that allow students the chance to play such an integral role in the rallying world, especially on the world stage. Pirelli is always looking at new ways to support motorsport enthusiasts and we are delighted to have assisted Myerscough students in our own special way.”
