Throughout recorded history, long-distance travel has captivated human society. Since at least ancient Greek times, we’ve celebrated legendary distances of human travel, such as the roughly 25 miles (46km) Pheidippides ran to Marathon to announce a Greek military victory before dying from exhaustion. In recent history, we have seen daredevils push the mileage of their bodies and their vehicles in order to set longer records and achieve wider fame.

Thanks to modern automotive technology and advancements in tire development, you can comfortably travel distances that were previously unfathomable to past generations. We won’t dare you to beat the world-record longest driven journey, which is currently over 460,000 miles (741,065 km) and counting (yes, this drive is still ongoing), but we can suggest some exciting cross-country road trips in the U.S. that’ll test the true limits of your tires’ mileage.

The Longest Drive

Crossing through 12 states and stretching more than 3,300 miles (more than 6000km), Route 20 is the longest American roadway and a formidable road trip for any traveler and their tires. As you make the trek from Boston to Newport, Oregon, you’ll find plenty of sights to explore, including the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and Nebraska’s unique shrine to American car culture: Carhenge (Carhenge is a replica of England's Stonehenge located near the city of Alliance, Nebraska, in the High Plains region of the United States. Instead of being built with large standing stones, as is the case with the original Stonehenge, Carhenge is formed from vintage American automobiles, all covered with gray spray paint. Built by Jim Reinders, it was dedicated at the June 1987 summer solstice).

Though the miles may seem daunting at first, this is a road trip well worth driving for the sights and experiences along the way.

A Classic Route

You’ll be hard pressed to name a more historic highway in the U.S. than Route 66, and for good reason. Running from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, it isn’t the most extensive roadway in America; but it has an undeniable cultural significance as the first major road trip route and its subsequent appearances in iconic 20th century films.

If you’re looking to add a retro vibe to your travels, look no further than the historic Route 66 and its flashy neon signs.

Smooth “Sailing”

Looking from north to south, you can find quite the scenic drive with lots of sand and surf. Consider making a beachside trek along the Atlantic Coast. Stretching 1,600 miles (almost 3000km) from the Big Apple all the way down to the Keys, the Atlantic Coast road trip is a time investment. This road trip will take you and your car away from the busy highways and along smaller roads that allow you to appreciate the unique sights, foods and cultures of the states you pass through (and don’t forget the constant coastal views).

With a relaxed, slower pace, you can explore the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. along the Atlantic Coast and soak up some saltwater sun along the way.

No matter what road trip you’re planning, make sure it’s a seamless one by choosing the right tires and taking care of them along the way. Be sure to check for optimal tire pressure and tread depth before departure, and take a good long look at all your tires for even wear and to spot any potential bumps, cracks, or cuts, as these may warrant a professional check-up. Once you hit the road, do your best to avoid big bumps or potholes in the road and always load a spare in case of mishaps.

Whether you’re revving your sports car on P Zeros or loading your family into the SUV equipped with Scorpion tires, stick to these tire care principles and you’ll enjoy all the benefits of Pirelli’s mileage on the long road ahead.
