Legacy of speed

GP: Monaco GP
Date: 23 May 1982
Winner: Riccardo Patrese, Brabham-Ford

The Monaco race was held not long after the death of Gilles Villeneuve in Belgium, which meant Ferrari only entered one car for Pironi.

Arnoux started from pole in the Renault with Riccardo Patrese also on the front row in the Brabham.

The closing stages were chaotic as it began to rain.

With three laps remaining, Prost was leading, but crashed into the guardrails and retired. Patrese inherited the lead but spun at the Loews hairpin and slid over the kerb back onto the track.

He was passed by Pironi, De Cesaris in the Alfa Romeo and Daly, now third but a lap down in the Williams.

Riccardo got going again with a bit of help from the marshals and the fact it's a downhill run to the Portier corner.

He was fourth, but Pironi retired shortly afterwards as did De Cesaris and Daly. Patrese believed Rosberg was leading in the other Williams and showed no emotion as he crossed the finish line.

In fact, he was furious for having spun out of the lead, but he was the winner. Some strange hunch meant he had packed a tuxedo when leaving Italy and he would go on to wear it at the Gala Ball that night to honour the winner.

Riccardo was born in Padua on 17 April 1954 (256 GP starts, 6 wins, 8 poles) and, on that day, was the first Italian to stand on the top step of the podium since Vittorio Brambilla won the 1975 Austrian Grand Prix.
