GP: Tuscan Grand Prix
Date: 13 September 2020
Winner: Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes
It was the one and only time that a Grand Prix has been held at the Mugello circuit, finding a slot on the calendar due to the logistical complications of the pandemic.
The track is owned by Ferrari and the event was a tribute to the Prancing Horse, with the team celebrating taking part in its one thousandth Formula 1 World Championship event.
The first of those took place on 21 May 1950 in Monaco when Ascari finished second behind Fangio's Alfa Romeo.
To celebrate the 1000, a big party was organised in Florence at the Palazzo Vecchio in the Piazza della Signoria. Michael Schumacher's son Mick did a show run in an F2004, the car with which his father took his seventh and final world title.
For this race, the Maranello cars were painted in the same dark red used on the very first Ferrari, the 125 S, built in 1947.
While red was the dominant colour of the weekend, Mercedes won the race, with a one-two finish from Hamilton and Bottas.
Albon made his maiden podium appearance, third for Red Bull Racing, while in the Ferraris, Leclerc and Vettel had to settle for eighth and tenth.
Mugello thus became the fourth Italian venue to host a round of the F1 World Championship along with Monza, Imola and Pescara, the latter hosting just one race in 1957 on the 25 kilometre street circuit used since 1924 for the legendary Coppa Acerbo.
