Innovation based on sustainability, concrete actions, and quantifiable and verifiable results - these are some of the pillars of Pirelli's way of doing business guided by the Principles of the Global Compact of the United Nations. This year saw the Company once again included in the prestigious “Global Compact LEAD” list, recognition given to those companies that, at the world level, are distinguished by their commitment to the implementation of the Ten Principles regarding human rights, work, the environment and the fight against corruption.

In 2021, there were 37 companies worldwide, of which four Italian, acknowledged as “Global Compact LEAD” with Pirelli for the first time the only one from the Automobiles & Parts sector.

“For Pirelli – commented Marco Tronchetti Provera, CEO and Executive Vice Chairman of Pirelli – industry means innovation, accelerating change to benefit society and safeguard the environment. The confirmation of Pirelli's inclusion in the Global Compact LEAD list of the United Nations is a source of pride and recognizes our constant efforts in the pursuit of challenging goals through actions aimed at concrete results”.

Pirelli's inclusion in the Global Compact LEAD of the United Nations, which Pirelli joined in 2004, is a testament to the company's commitment to achieve effect results and solutions through an innovative approach based on the joint efforts of companies and stakeholders at the global level, combining economic, social and environmental capital.

To qualify as LEAD in particular, a company must communicate its own progress via an annual sustainability report which illustrates in detail progress with and implementation of the Ten Principles. In addition, the participants must take part in at least two Global Compact “Action Platforms” in line with the Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each platform involves companies, Global Compact local networks, civilian society, governments and partners of the United Nations to resolve complex and innovates in areas linked to the SDGs.

This is an especially prestigious acknowledgement, which this year saw Pirelli demonstrate its commitment to the Global Compact participating in the “Decent Work in Global Supply Chains” and “Sustainable Finance” Action Platforms. The goal of the first platform is to promote respect for human rights and the fundamental principles of work along the supply chain.

The Sustainable Finance platform, on the other hand, has the task of redefining the future of company investments, underlining the role that these will take in the promotion of sustainable development. In this regard, Pirelli is a founder member of the “CFO Taskforce for the SDGs”, the working group set up by the United Nations Global Compact in order to place corporate finance at the centre of the agenda for sustainable finance, and, in September 2020, it was one of the signatories of the “CFO Principles on Integrated SDG Investments and Finance”, the purpose of which is to promote investments which support the implementation of the SDGs.
