Home Life Lifestyle design Montblanc's most famous writing instrument dresses up to party for Pirelli's 150 years

Everyone knows the charm of Montblanc writing instruments. To celebrate Pirelli's 150th anniversary, the German company created a special edition of its most famous pen, the Meisterstück ("masterpiece" in German). It's been designed to underline the common pursuit of excellence shared by the two companies, combining the art of writing with the art of making tyres.

BLACK AND RED: THE TWO CHARACTERISTIC COLOURS

There are many qualities that unite Pirelli and Montblanc, including the desire to reach the highest standards. Looking back at each company's origins, another similarity emerges. Both began by making rubber products: Pirelli producing industrial and consumer products in rubber, while Montblanc made one of their first writing instruments in ebonite: a hard rubber that gives the shade of black that's reminiscent of both Pirelli and Montblanc. The design of the Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 72 enhances this colour with subtle red rings that add dynamism to the solid Au750 white gold cone and cap top. The colour nuance is also found in the see-through ink window that is found on the barrel of the pen.

A MEETING OF TWO MASTERPIECES

Pirelli and Montblanc also have parallels when it comes to ensuring the highest standards of quality. An example of this is the passion for perfection and attention to detail typical not only of writing instruments but of all  Montblanc products, as well as the cutting-edge technology of Pirelli tyres designed for the Formula 1 World Championship©. Pirelli has been Global Tyre Partner since 2011 and it's no co-incidence that in Formula 1 the fastest tyres are always the red ones…

A LOOK INSPIRED BY PIRELLI

The Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 72 blends the luxury and elegance of Montblanc with the fame of Pirelli. The black rubber surface, in fact, visible through the Au750 solid white gold skeletonisation on the cap and the body, carries with it the history of racing, containing pieces of genuine Pirelli competition tyres. The Limited Edition 72 skeleton overlay is crafted in solid white gold. Crowning the top of the cap, the Montblanc emblem is painstakingly captured in brilliant mother of pearl.

A PIECE OF HISTORY AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Pirelli's long history is not only present in the materials but can also be seen on the writing instrument itself. In particular, the iconic "long P" of the logo (said to be influenced by the first elongated letters on the signature of Alberto Pirelli; the son of the founder) inspired the engraving on the cap and on the body of the pen – a motif that continues across the whole design. The official logo of Pirelli's 150th anniversary is engraved on the handcrafted Au750 solid white gold nib.
