Are smart tyres the future of mobility?

Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre enhances safety and driving pleasure, expanding functionality in the smart road and smart city contexts thanks to V2X connectivity

Home Life Innovation technology Are smart tyres the future of mobility?

In the automotive world, innovation is not limited to engines or autonomous driving systems: tyres are also undergoing a technological revolution thanks to Pirelli's Cyber™ Tyre technology. From simple mechanical components designed to transmit forces and ensure grip and performance, they are now becoming intelligent, connected elements capable of communicating with the vehicle, other vehicles and infrastructure, becoming fully-fledged members of the digital ecosystems of modern mobility. Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre is the first system in the world capable of collecting data via sensorised tyres, processing and transmitting them in real time to the vehicle's electronics, improving safety, comfort and driving dynamics. This technology paves the way for new features: from optimising performance according to the driving context to proactive safety management and wear monitoring. This evolution does not only apply to cars, but also fits into the development of smart roads and smart cities, where every element is interconnected to enable safer and more efficient mobility.

How Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre works

In-tyre sensors can detect parameters such as pressure, temperature and acceleration. This data is sent in real time to the vehicle and, once processed by Pirelli's proprietary algorithms, is used by electronic control systems such as ABS, ESP and ADAS. The result? Greater safety, more effective braking and optimised traction control.

Cyber™ Tyre therefore combines hardware, software and algorithms. The collaboration with Bosch has accelerated the development of new features, thanks to integration into the vehicle's control units.

The technology is already available on prestige segment models and is being extended to new platforms. Among the most recent partnerships, Aston Martin has announced the adoption of Cyber™ Tyre on future models, confirming the value of this innovation.

V2X communication: beyond the vehicle

Cyber™ Tyre is not limited to in-car communication. Thanks to Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) connectivity, the data collected is distributed to infrastructure and other vehicles, enabling new features in smart roads and smart cities.

Pilot projects such as the one launched with the Regione Puglia demonstrate the potential of this technology in monitoring road conditions: new data flows make it possible to plan maintenance and prevent risks, improving safety and the management of urban and extra-urban mobility.

Furthermore, thanks to the potential of V2X technologies, it becomes possible to share information on road conditions with vehicles, infrastructure and other digital systems, interact with traffic lights and signage, and optimise mobility applications, contributing significantly to the development of autonomous driving.

International recognition

Cyber™ Tyre won the title of ‘V2X Innovation of the Year' at the 2025 AutoTech Breakthrough Awards, promoted by the Tech Breakthrough intelligence platform, which recognised Cyber™ Tyre as "a fundamental technology for the future of smart mobility, including autonomous driving, connected vehicles and infrastructure digitalisation. By integrating intelligence directly into the tyre, Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre makes transport systems safer, as well as sustainable and data-driven”.
