Few things frustrate a driver more than having to pull off the highway to fix a flat tyre, but this may become a distant memory. Seal Inside™ is an innovative technology, developed by Pirelli’s Research Department that allows the tyre to avoid pressure loss and to maintain its integrity after a puncture, allowing the driver to carry on without having to change the tyre. Despite this, customers rarely, if ever, ask for a self-sealing tyre. Only once they know about it, nearly half recognize its value.
Pirelli tested the knowledge of self-sealing tyres with its current and potential consumers. Spontaneous knowledge of self-sealing tyres is good among drivers (33%) and suggested knowledge rises to 61%. Only 12% of those who are aware of self-sealing products currently say they use them, but this figure rises to 18% for Passat and Tiguan owners, which represent two of the main vehicle models that have adopted self sealing technology as Original Equipment. Both those who know the self-sealing tyre and those who do not know it declare a good propensity to buy the product (84% for connoisseurs who already use it, 59% for connoisseurs who do not use it, 66% for those who do not know it). Among the users of self-sealing products, prevail adopters, those who have purchased self-sealing tyres at replacement, compared to those who still have original equipment tyres.
The tyre specialist plays a fundamental role in the adoption of a replacement product. In this case, dealers can well convey the benefits of self-sealing tyres and thus influence the end user choice. Even if, at first, end users’ awareness is not very high, once they are thought about the self sealing benefits by the dealers, they understand this technology’s usefulness and are willing to pay a higher price for it (+10/20% versus a standard summer tyre).
