Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton sets fastest-ever lap in Austin on Pirelli’s ultrasoft pink colored tire to support breast cancer

Teams also test intermediate tire compound prototype in the morning

Damp conditions in the morning followed by dry weather in the afternoon at the circuit of the americas

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton went fastest in the second free practice session at Austin using Pirelli’s ultrasoft tire ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. This followed the Free Practice 1 morning session that started in damp conditions. This meant all drivers started with the intermediate tires (with just one car selecting the wet tires), before moving onto the slick tires for the second half of Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2.

The drivers also tested a softer intermediate tire compound prototype in the morning. These tires used an unaltered construction. Data now has to be analyzed.

Hamilton’s fastest lap on the ultrasoft tires in FP2 was also the fastest-ever lap recorded at the Circuit of the Americas, which eclipsed the previous benchmark – Hamilton’s own pole time set last year.

MARIO ISOLA – HEAD OF CAR RACING
“It was a day of contrasts in Austin, with damp weather in FP1 followed by warmer weather in the afternoon. And of course one big difference was our pink ultrasoft tires – usually colored purple – which certainly attracted a lot of attention! The varying conditions today meant that it was quite hard to obtain consistent data, but we saw the fastest-ever lap of Austin set in FP2 using the ultrasoft tire, despite a tricky FP1. This morning we tried out a prototype intermediate tire compound, which was softer than the current tire compound but with the same construction. There are still some questions to be answered about how all the tire compounds interact with the track this weekend.”
