The longest running of any Pirelli motorsport sponsorship, the company celebrates a decade this year as the sole tire supplier to all classes of the World Superbike Championship (WSBK). To commemorate the occasion, the Italian tire manufacturer has announced the transition from conventional 16.5” tires to 17” for the 2013 season.

Pirelli engineers have completely redesigned the new DiabloTM Superbike slick, DiabloTM Wet intermediate and DiabloTM Rain full wet tires with new compounds, new profiles and new sidewalls. Stability and cornering have been improved, while performance maintains optimal throughout the race. The new compounds are softer, more versatile and offer longer tread life so that all races can be run with just two front compounds as opposed to the three needed on the 16.5” tire.

Pirelli’s research and development team has also concentrated their efforts on designing a new intermediate tire, the DiabloTM Wet, which provides a more satisfactory response to team and rider expectations and a broader spectrum of use. These characteristics render the tire potentially decisive in certain weather conditions and a crucial factor for teams when deciding which race strategy to adopt. Click here for an in-depth look at the new collection of 17″ Superbike tires now in action
