The opening round of the ‘Internazionali d’Italia’ Italian Motocross Championship was a rampant one for Pirelli Scorpion MX tires just a week after success at the Starcross International meeting at Mantova. The MidSoft 32 front and rear was used by all Pirelli riders on this occasion due to the wet conditions and assisted in victories in both classes. David Philippaerts owned MX1 on his factory Yamaha while the second spot went to his team-mate Steve Frossard. Kevin Strijbos and Antonio Cairoli followed in the standings; the latter a victim of a facial injury caused by a stone in the first race.

“It wasn’t an easy day” said Philippaerts, “but the bike worked well and I was feeling confident. I want to push for the world championship again and we have started the year in a good way.”

The MX2 podium saw another Pirelli Scorpion MX clean sweep with Dutchman Jeffrey Herlings finishing in front of works KTM team-mate Jeremy Van Horebeek. In third was Jumbo Yamaha’s Glen Coldenhoff.
