Sustainability in the Pirelli's history

With more than 130 years of industrial tradition and manufacturing experience with the most advanced technologies on an international scale, the Pirelli Group has made a considerable contribution - within the bounds of its abilities and business responsibilities - to the development of products, technologies and management instruments that promote sustainable industrial development, while always proactively interacting with the socio-cultural context in which it operated.

Proud of the results achieved so far, Pirelli wishes to respond promptly to the increasing need of communication and discloses the information regarding its sustainability commitment and the company's results in terms of sustainable performance, vis-á-vis the increasingly wide audience of socially responsible Investors and Consultants

OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER	Pirelli is one of the top ten most valuable Italian brands in the world: according to Interbrand, the Pirelli brand is worth 1.5 billion euros. "Accountability Rating" includes Pirelli as one of the 10 best Italian companies in terms of transparency and social responsibility. Pirelli, presented as best practice at the Premio Aretè,  took part in the 20th National Campaign for Quality. In China, the Pirelli group won the title of "Best Tyre Producer of the Year" and, again in China, Pirelli organised the first Chinese Suppliers' Conference. About 200 local companies were involved - producers of raw materials and spare parts, with the objective of promoting the Group's Code of Ethics and the values to adopt for social responsibility and environmental sustainability. Social responsibility and sustainability were also at the centre of Pirelli's activities in Romania where - in collaboration with Milan's Niguarda hospital - the Group financed 300 hours of training and professional development for the medical staff of Slatina hospital. Again in Slatina, 40 young people between 8 and 14 years of age, all from socially troubled environments, participated in "Inter Campus Romania ", the Pirelli-sponsored project to promote social integration through sport and its values. The expansion plan in Russia continues: Minister Scajola visited the Russian headquarters of Pirelli, which has invested about 300 million euros to build - with its partner Russian Technologies - an industrial facility for tyre manufacturing in the Samara region. Pirelli maintains its leadership of the European market. The readers of Switzerland''s "Auto Illustrierte" magazine voted Pirelli the best tyre brand of the year for the third year running.
JULY AUGUST SEPTEMBER	A new generation of Pirelli "green" tyres will be born in China. This is the main result of the agreement reached between the Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation and China's University of Shandong. The agreement includes great synergies between Pirelli and the local community: university researchers will work for a year in close contact with Pirelli engineers to develop a range of tyres with low rolling resistance and able to appreciably reduce fuel consumption.  A similar agreement has been signed by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Peking Municipality to start a trial of the antiparticulate filters developed by Pirelli Eco Technology, able to remove over 95% of the polluting emissions of diesel engines, in the Chinese capital. Pirelli achieves further recognition for its focus on CRS values: Vigeo, a European company specialised in evaluating company performance in sustainability and social responsibility,  gave Pirelli full marks for "human rights", "environment" and "client suppliers"!. Pirelli succeeded the latest sustainability audit in the Financial tyres ethical indices, while the Dow Jones Sustainability Index confirms the Group as world leader in the "Autoparts and Tyres" sector for the second year running. Among its cultural initiatives, Pirelli has maintained its support for the FAI, the Italian equivalent of Britain's National Trust, and is again one of the promoters of the World Conference on the Future of Science. The fourth edition focuses on "Food and Water" to promote a more sustainable development of resources. The score assigned to Pirelli in the original equipment motorist satisfaction study was 22 points above the sector average.
APRIL MAY JUNE	Pirelli promotes relations between Italy and Rumania: this is the objective of the "Diffusion of Italian Culture" project in the Slatina area,  presented by the Group in its Rumanian factory with the aim of promoting reciprocal knowledge of the Italian and Rumanian cultures. Pirelli and other companies have developed a tool kit on "practicing gender equality in careers": the guide, presented in Brussels at the general Assembly of CSR Europe, describes best management practices for gender diversity. The Group attended the "Diversity at work" job meeting and, thanks to its sustainable activities, has received prestigious confirmation of its work in the ASPI and FTSE4Good sustainability indexes. In China, Pirelli Tyre contributed to aid the people affected by the Sichuan earthquake.  A new chair has been created at the Milan Polytechnic: "Fundamental Chemicals of Tyre Technology and Chemical Engineering", the result of an agreement between the university and the Pirelli Group. CNR (the Italian National Research Council) awarded the Masi Oscar for industrial innovation to Pirelli Labs.
JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH	Pirelli is world leader in sustainability in the "Auto Parts and Tyres" sector This recognition comes from the SAM Group (Sustainable Asset Management), which, in its "Sustainability Yearbook 2008" also awards the Group "Gold Class Company" status. Sustainability as a strategic business asset is implemented in its participation in the "European Alliance for CSR", formalised early in 2007 and taken forward with active participation in European Laboratories for the Alliance. Training initiatives included the visit of honour from the Stanford Graduate School of Business: Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera received a delegation of students from the prestigious California management school at Castello degli Arcimboldi.
