Pirelli Labs

Opened in May 2001, the Pirelli Labs are the core of advanced research for the entire business of the Pirelli group. They concentrate on developing
innovative materials, with a special focus on those made from
renewable energy sources, and on the use of
advanced technology in their production and application, in line with the company strategy.
The activity of the Labs also extends to
innovating production processes and to developing solutions with a
low environmental impact. In the recent past even extending to the phototonics sector and the development of new generation, optical components.
In the area of low environmental impact solutions, Pirelli Labs has started to make concentrated
photovoltaic energy panels and is presently conducting research into
alternative materials for the containment frames, as well as
efficient movement systems. Its intense studies into developing
polymer composites has led to the introduction of new materials for making active and passive components of the telecommunication systems for access networks.
Projects involving sustainable building have also been completed, such as the
recycling of old tyres for use as a raw material for
noise and heat insulation. Similar activities are also under way in the development of
particulate filters and of clothing,
footwear and accessories.
Pirelli Labs work with research centres belonging to the Group all over the world as well as with prestigious private organisations and universities in the United States, in Russia and in Italy. As of today, it has assigned over 40 scholarships at the Bicocca University of Milan, in the Science of Materials Department and, at the same University, it funds a post-graduate course on the Science of Materials and Industrial Specialisation.
