Director of Pirelli & C. S.p.A. since April 29, 2008.

Born in Ravenna in 1944.

After a period of teaching high schools in 1969/70, he has always worked in the Information Technology field, first with Hewlett Packard and then with General Automotion of Anaheim (California) until he became General Manager. In 1985 he founded the Italian Branch of Microsoft as Chief Executive Office and General Manager.

After several years of activity and international responsibilities, during which he kept the role of Chairman of the Italian Branch, position he still holds, he became Deputy Chairman of Microsoft Corporation in 1998 and, in February 2003, Senior Chairman of Microsoft Europa, Middle East and Africa.

"Rotariano", Past President 1997/98 of Club Milano Sud Est, in 1998 he was awarded the honorem degree in Statistics and in Information Technology Business by the University of Bologna

In December 2003 he was awarded the Golden Keys by his native town, Cattolica. On November 25, 2004 H.E. the Cardinal Archbishop of Milan Mons. Dionigi Tettamanzi elected Umberto Paolucci "Dottore ad Honorem del Collegio della Biblioteca Ambrosiana".

In 2005 he was elected "Manager of the year" by Manageritalia Association which represents  the tertiary sector managers. Since June 29, 2006 he has been Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy. On November 15, 2006 he took the position of Chairman of Enit-Agenzia Nazionale for the turism, appointed in such a role by Presidential Decree on proposal of the First Minister.

He is also member of the Board of Directors of several companies, associations and foundations in Italy and Europe.

In 2002 he was  awarded the title of  "Cavaliere del Lavoro" of the Italian Republic.

He holds the requirements provided by the Corporate Governance Code (Borsa Italiana) to be qualified as independent.
