Born in Roma in 1947.

After getting a Master in Business Administration at the Business School of the Columbia University, in 1971 he began his professional carrier at Banco di Roma - Central Direction, as Manager for the Financial Analysis and then as Manager for International Financing.

From 1974 to 1976 he has been Financial Director of the St. Gobain Group in Italy (at the Milan office) and later in Paris.

In 1977 he joins FIAT S.p.A. as manager for north/center/south America of the Foreign Finance Division; he later becomes director of Finance and from June to December 2002, Managing Director. He has been Managing Director of IFIL S.p.A. (1986/2002) Managing Director and General Director of IFI S.p.A. (1993/2002).
From April 2003 up to 2007 he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mediobanca - Banca di Credito Finanziario S.p.A.


He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Telecom Italia S.p.A., Deputy Chairman of Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A. and RCS  Mediagroup S.p.A..

Gabriele Galateri di Genola is also a member of the following Boards of Directors: Banca Esperia S.p.A., Banca CRS S.p.A., Italmobiliare S.p.A., Fiera di Genova S.p.A., Istituto Europeo di Oncologia and Accor S.A..

He has been appointed Cavaliere del Lavoro in June 1999.
