In both championships the Pirelli tyres supplied will be in four compound versions for dry (hard, medium, soft and supersoft) and one version for wet. Each car will count on four sets of slicks and three sets of wets per event. Sizes are: 245/660-13 front and 325/660-13 rear.
Managing tyres when racing is very important for drivers and in order to increase also the capability of GP2 drivers in handling tyre wear a degree of artificial degradation will be added to ensure less durability.
Since 2010 Pirelli has been the exclusive supplier of the GP3 class, the world championship for single-seaters created on Dallara chassis and Renault engines.
This is a Series intended to give young drivers a chance to develop their driving skills and then move onto GP2, involving 30 drivers of 17 different nationalities, aged between 17 and 24 years. Each event is run over two races characterized by the starting grid with inverted orders.
During the past season Pirelli gained strong experience both during the races but also during intense testing on a wide variety of European circuits to further develop the GP3 tyres (in sizes: 230/570-13 front and 290/590-13 rear) specifically designed for the Dallara cars.
As last year, also in 2011 three compound versions (hard, medium and soft) for dry and one version for wet will be supplied. Each driver will have three sets of slicks and 2 sets of wets at his disposal for each event.
In agreement with the Series organizers, the compound specifications will be slightly different from those used last year. A degree of artificial degradation will be added to the tyres in 2011. Having less durable, high performance tyres should ensure spectacular and closely fought races during the week-ends.
The 2011 calendar includes 9 rounds in Europe to be held in the same week-ends as Formula One and GP2 from May to mid-November.
