The Pirelli World Challenge has emerged in recent years as the flagship championship in Pirelli’s ever-growing lineup of partner sports car road racing series. After a close and competitive debut for the 2013 season in St. Petersberg, the championship series took to the streets of Long Beach as part of the 39th annual Long Beach Grand Prix.
After a weekend of excitement, Audi, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Acura and Porsche found themselves atop the podium once more, all sporting Pirelli P Zero tires in competition.
In addition to providing a wide range of P Zero fitments for a variety of competing models in all four Pirelli World Challenge racing classes – GT, GTS, Touring and B Spec – Pirelli has also branched out in support of more than a dozen other racing classes in several different racing series. Complementing the Pirelli World Challenge partnership, Pirelli Tire North America returns this year as the official tire of the GRAND-AM Ferrari Challenge, the Pirelli Cayman Interseries Endurance Cup Championship and the Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA West, a series that is home to 911-based Porsches. New Pirelli partnerships for 2013 include the NARRA (North American Road Racing Association) SRT Viper Cup, US GT Championship and Whelen US TimeTrial Championship, the IMSA Lamborghini Super Trofeo series and Challenge Club Racing, another showcase series that features late-model Ferraris.
“North America is an important part of Pirelli’s more than 100 years of competition heritage,” said Rafael Navarro, Vice President of Communications, Media Relations and Motorsports for Pirelli Tire North America. “Our current and expanding lineup of sports car road racing series gives us the privilege of working with top sanctioning bodies and the incredibly talented teams and drivers who are racing with some of the top automobile manufacturers in the world on Pirelli P Zero tires.”
