Business sustainability is the creation of value through services and sustainable business practices that focus on environmental and social responsibility. Sustainable companies create more added value, which is then distributed to all stakeholders.
This vision permeates the Group sustainability documents: the Ethical Code, the Code of Conduct, the Quality Policy, the Social Responsibility Policy for Occupational Health, Safety and Rights, and Environment, the Green Sourcing Policy and the Equal Opportunities Statement.
An advanced sustainability governance system allows the Group to effectively manage the economic, social and environmental impact of its processes, products and services, with a constant focus on innovation, with the awareness of the role of a multinational group in a global context and in view of comprehensive risk prevention.
The organisational basis of this governance is represented by the Sustainability Steering Committee, which is also responsible for equal opportunity issues and policy. This body, which was formed by the Chairman at the beginning of 2004 and chaired personally by him, is responsible for setting policy and guiding the advancement of sustainability throughout the company. Then, the organisational structure is made up of a Group Sustainability and Risk Governance Department, which reports directly to the Group General counsel. The SRG Department is centrally comprised by the Group Sustainability and Equal Opportunities Officer and locally by the Sustainability and Equal Opportunities Country Managers, covering all Group affiliates.
Pirelli is also focused on Corporate Governance, aware of the importance of the same in terms of creation of value. The Group therefore dedicates ongoing efforts to maintaining its corporate governance system in line with best national and international practices, always with the aim of taking on board innovative ideas, which can bring added value to its corporate governance set-up. A strong commitment is reserved to the Risk Governance Model application throughout the Group.
The SA8000® international standard is in turn the reference tool identified by Pirelli as the benchmark for assessing the consistency of the Group's conduct with the CSR principles specified therein. This entails monitoring of the affiliates via internal and external audits, extended also to Group’s suppliers. ISO14001 (environment), OHSAS18001(Health & Safety), ISO 90001, ISO/TS 16949, ISO/IEC 17025 (Quality) certifications of the Group plants complete a picture of continuous improvement.
Pirelli Group adopts a "multi-stakeholder" approach, it in fact pursues sustainable and steady growth, the latter being as much as possible based on a fair balance between the different expectations of all those who interact with the Company: environment, shareholders and the financial community, customers, employees, local communities, public administrations, institutions and NGOs, suppliers and competitors.
Pirelli's sustainable performance and its new challenges are reported to Stakeholders every year via the Sustainability Report, which constitutes an integral part of the Group Annual Financial Report, includes the Letter of Assurance in compliance with AA1000 principles and is sent to an extensive network at world level.
