Tyre and Parts signs the Copenhagen Communiqué

Pirelli Tyres and Parts has adhered to the Copenhagen Communiqué, the initiative promoted by the British organisation the Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders’ Group on Climate Change and supported by over 500 companies at a world level.

The objective of the commitment: develop new policies – in particular for the control of CO2 emissions – as a response to the urgency of the question of climate change.

The basic structure of the agreement envisages:

a maximum limit of global emissions and a long term procedure for the reduction of all gas sourced emissions of greenhouse effect for the period 2013-2050.
immediate commitment by the industrialised countries for the ‘de-carbonisation’ of the economy
intervention by the developing countries to delineate a plan for the reduction of emissions.

The Copenhagen Communiqué will be presented at the next United Nations Conference on the climate due to take place from 7 December. Pirelli Tyre and Parts, together with ENEL and Telecom, is among the Italian signatories of the paper, a testimony to the Group’s commitment to a sustainable environment.

In 2007, Pirelli Tyre had already adhered to the Bali Communiqué on the occasion of the United Nations Conference there on climatic change, together with 150 other international companies, a document for concrete strategic development through joint intervention of governments for an exhaustive world agreement on the climate.

Protagonists On The Renewable Energy Scene

Pirelli Ambiente and Global Cleantech Capital (GCC) reached an agreement for acquisition by Pirelli Ambiente of the 50% stake owned by GCC in Solar Utility. Solar Utility was founded in 2007 as a 50/50 joint venture between Pirelli Ambiente and GCC, a private equity fund specialized in clean energy investments, in order to make joint investments in the photovoltaic sector. The transaction, worth approximately 8 million Euro, will increase Pirelli Ambiente’s stake to 100% of the company.
The purchase of the 50% stake not previously held by Pirelli Ambiente will allow it to pursue new growth Opportunities for Solar Utility, including through industrial partnerships like the one recently begun with Norwegian national energy utility Statkraft, as the first step to creating an important player in the renewable energy industry in Italy.

PIRELLI SUPPORTS THE VALUES OF THE CAR

Pirelli at ‘Viva l’Auto’, the event with the car as its protagonist as the friend of the environment, safe and that makes savings. Under the banner of sustainable mobility, three days were devoted to the car of the future and took place in Florence from 16-18 October, among technological innovations, road safety and the evolution of the market. An event animated by display areas, safe driving tests and a programme of conventions that saw the leaders of the sector involved alongside its institutions and the media.

Pirelli, official co-sponsor of the event, participated with a stand that showed the company’s entire Cinturato ecological range and that of the newborn Winter Snowcontrol Series II. In addition, Pirelli launched an initiative for the general public called ‘A Record Change’, a fastest tyre change challenge to make training interactive and fun.

On Saturday 17 October, Francesco Gori, managing director of Pirelli Tyre, also took part in the convention on new development scenarios of the car market and its contribution to the recovery from the crisis, together with other experts of the sector.

The event concluded with the announcement of the new Peugeot Crossover as the Auto Europa 2010 (2010 European Car of the Year), recognition that the UIGA (Union of Italian Motoring Journalists) assigned to the vehicle based on the parameters of originality, performance, safety and eco-compatibility.

PIRELLI CONFIRMED IN FINANCIAL TIMES SUSTAINABILITY INDEXES FOR THE SEVENTH YEAR IN A ROW

For the seventh consecutive year, Pirelli has been confirmed in the twice-yearly review of Financial Times sustainability indices FTSE4Good World and STOXX, which measure corporate performance in terms of respect for international standards of economic, social and environmental sustainability. British independent research provider Eiris, working for the Financial Times, evaluated among other corporate characteristics: sustainable supply chain management, ethical behaviour rules, means of prevention and management of risk, environmental impact management and relations with stakeholders. The review did not admit new companies to the Automobiles & Parts segment of the indices, continuing to include Pirelli as the only Italian company included in that segment.

CHINA, ANTIPARTICULATE FILTERS GROW

Three agreements for reducing polluting emissions and distributing antiparticulate filters were signed today in Beijing by Pirelli:

with the the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People’s Republic of China in the presence of the Italian Minister, Stefania Prestigiacomo, Chinese authorities, and the Chairman of the Pirelli Group, Marco Tronchetti Provera. The agreement foresees collaboration among the three parties in development of projects for distribution of filter systems for reduction of particulate emissions from diesel vehicles already in circulation (‘retrofit’) and introduction of technologies and advanced products, as the Pirelli products have been shown to be following tests and pilot projects already completed. Part of the environmental cooperation program launched by the two ministries in 2000, the agreement focuses on the five provinces recently singled out by the Chinese government for adoption of measures to limit circulation of polluting vehicles, among which Shandong (the location of the Pirelli plant).
between the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, the Municipality of Beijing and Pirelli Eco Technology to support installation of filters on polluting vehicles circulating in Beijing, is part of this commitment. The agreement follows the completion of a pilot project launched in 2008, which brought homologation of the filters produced by the Pirelli Group, thanks to their particular technological characteristics. The city of Beijing has already ordered a significant quantity of Pirelli Eco Technology filter systems which will be fitted on buses in the capital city.
with Hixih Group (previously the Yinhe Group), already a partner of Pirelli since 2005 in tyre manufacturing, to build a plant for manufacturing of filters in Yanzhou, in the province of Shandong.

The new factory, whose construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2010, will be located in the same area where the manufacturing sites developed by the two partners for production of truck and car tyres were built, and will thus create a diversified industrial hub able to profit from synergies in manufacturing and distribution of the two products. The investment, already included in the 2009-2011 industrial plan, will take into account the evolution of the market and could reach 50 million euros in three years, with manufacturing capacity of around 100,000 filters per year and approximately 1200 employees. The industrial site currently uses advanced manufacturing technology and represents a manufacturing, logistics and commercial hub for the entire Asia-Pacific region for the Pirelli Group. Today about 60% of Pirelli’s overall production in China is for the local market, while the remaining 40% is exported to other Asia-Pacific markets.

PIRELLI CONFIRMED AS GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY LEADER IN DOW JONES INDEXES

This is the outcome of the 2009 review by the SAM Group of the Dow Jones sustainability indices, in which Pirelli continues to be included both in the DJSI WORLD index and in the European DJSI STOXX index.

Within its segment, the Bicocca Group – the only Italian group that has achieved worldwide leadership – obtained a global rating of 88% (+ 11% with respect to 2008) compared with a segment average of 48%.

Exactly as in previous years, for the Autoparts & Tyres segment, only 4 companies were featured in the DJSI World index: Pirelli & C, Denso Corp, Michelin, and Johnson Control Inc., while only two are included in the DJSI STOXX: Pirelli and Michelin.

SAM (Sustainable Asset Management) is the Swiss ethical rating agency that carries out the process of selection of companies for admission to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a global index that brings together the best companies in the field of economic, financial, environmental and social sustainability, the result of collaboration between the Dow Jones New York stock exchange index, STOXX Ltd. and the SAM Group. CHINA: P7 AND P ZERO BEST TYRES OF THE YEAR

Pirelli scored a double at the 2009 China Tyre Enterprise Summit, which concluded recently in Shanghai.
The Cinturato P7 was voted “The Best New Tyre of the Year”, the Summit’s most prestigious award, while the P Zero, the high range tyre, won “The Best Ultra-High Performance Tyre” award as a result of its excellent performance in relation to that of its competitors in the category.

The Summit, which focused on an eco-sustainable theme of energy saving and protection of the environment, had at the centre of its debate research into new eco-compatible materials, the introduction of technological innovations that imply a lesser environmental impact and the creation of tyres that are increasingly ‘green’.
The attribution of two such important awards demonstrates the general appreciation by the industrial world of Pirelli’s policy of safety and respect for the environment, which it has pursued in recent years.

The awards were received on behalf of Pirelli by Michael Cati, commercial director of Pirelli Tyre China, who said, “It is a great honour for Pirelli to receive this recognition. From 2005, when the company entered the Chinese market, it has always introduced its latest technology and its new products. The P Zero and Cinturato P7 are proof of that. In line with the theme of the Summit, Pirelli will continue to focus on ‘green’ technology and energy saving while continuing to marry respect for the environment and performance“.

ANTI-PARTICULATE PIRELLI FILTERS IN LISBON AND PORTO

Pirelli Eco Technology, the Pirelli Group subsidiary dedicated to technologies for lowering harmful emissions from diesel engines, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Portuguese Ministries of Transportation and the Environment to test Feelpure anti-particulate filters on the public transit vehicles of Lisbon and Porto.
The MoU was signed yesterday in Lisbon by the CEO Pirelli Eco Technology, Bruno Tronchetti Provera, by the Secretary of State of the Portuguese Ministry of the Environment, Humberto Rosa, and by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Transportation, Ana Paula Vitorino. The agreement calls for two phases of testing Feelpure anti-particulate filters, capable of reducing particle emissions from diesel-powered vehicles by more than 90%, resulting in a significant improvement in air quality. The first phase involves testing on the public transit vehicles of Lisbon, the second on those of Porto.
Meanwhile, in China, the conclusion of the testing phase begun in mid-2008 has opened the door to homologation and eventual commercialization of Feelpure anti-particulate filters there, with a potential market for 145,000 filtering systems in the city of Beijing alone.
