PIRELLI AMONG THE WORLD BIGGEST IN THE RETAIL SECTOR

DELOITTEPirelli is the first Italian corporation in the classification of ‘Global Powers of Consumer Products’, the annual list of the 250 principal producers of consumer goods in the world compiled by Deloitte, one of the planet’s biggest companies of consultancy and review services.

In the 2009 edition, drawn up on the basis of the 2007 fiscal year, Pirelli moves up from 108th to 86th place, followed by Ferrero (100th), Barilla (123rd), Parmalat (129th), Indesit Company (144th) and Cremonini (207th).

The research by Deloitte has become essential reading for those who operate in, and follow, the evolution of the retail market. This year, the classification is dominated by electronics, with South Korea’s Samsung Electronics having become the biggest production company in the world, followed by Hewlett-Packard and Nestlé.

THE PROGRAMME OF THE FIFTH WORLD CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE

world fifth science conferenceA preview was given in Milan of ‘The DNA Revolution‘, the Fifth World Conference on the Future of Science promoted by the three Foundations of Giorgio Cini, Silvio Tronchetti Provera and Umberto Veronesi, scheduled for 20-22 September in Venice.

This year’s conference previewed the results of one of the most important revolutions in the recent history of the thoughts of man, the decoding of DNA, begun in the Fifties by James Watson and Francis Crick and concluded in 2000 by Craig Venter.

Brought together for three days on the Island of St. George, a number of the world’s most authoritative scientists will analyse the impact of this discovery on biotechnology, the comprehension of living beings, the protection of health and thefight against the principal illnesses such as cancer, on agriculture and the management of biological resources and new bioethics raised by the genetic consequences.

Also involved is the AIRC (Italian Association for Research Against Cancer), Italy’s point of reference in cancer research, which organised ‘Cancer Genetics’, the seminar on the evaluation of the risk, prevention of the risk, staminal cells of cancer and, finally, therapy with the targeted objective of discussion by world leaders in these areas.
Thanks to the DNA revolution, we have discovered the genetic bases of many illnesses that has permitted us to extend the duration of the life of man, also improving its quality”, explained James Watson, the Nobel Prize winner for the discovery of the DNA structure in the Fifties, who was present at this morning’s press conference. He continued, “In the next 10 years, we expect to arrive at understanding, in particular, ‘the essence of cancer’. Today, in the anti-tumour therapy target there are staminal cells that are the right objectives with which to defeat the illness. In addition, genetic engineering guarantees us a higher global level of health and well-being, helping us to obtain better foods from animals and better plants. A fundamental factor will also be the reduction of the cost of genomic research, which today is very high. The cost of the sequencing individual DNA will be increasingly within the reach of everyone“.

Those who participated in the presentation as well as James Watson were Umberto Veronesi, President of the conference, Chiara Tonelli, Secretary General, Giovanni Bazoli, President of the Giorgio Cini Foundation, Marco Tronchetti Provera, President of the Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation and Maria Ines Colnaghi, Scientific Director of the Italian Association for Research Against Cancer.

THE GREEN MARATON OF "CINTURATO P7"

img_p7Cinturato P7 is already on the track. A few days before the official presentation in Rome from 3-8 April, the Pirelli ecological tyre for large cubic capacity cars is on the Nardò International Test Track in the province of Lecce, Italy, conducting a dynamic test marathon involving a total of 500 journalist-testers and dealers from all over Europe.

Awaiting them at the Salento circuit is a ‘scuderia’ of the latest and most prestigious Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Alfa Romeo, BMW and Volvo E-class cars, for which the Cinturato P7 has been selected by their manufacturers as original equipment.

Performance and safety while respecting the environment. The Cinturato P7 is the first tyre for cars in the top market segment able to be a high performer, safe and ecological at the same time, due to avant garde materials and design techniques, which Pirelli recounted at the Castello Monaci in Lecce.

In synthesis: compounds and materials, structure and tread pattern were developed in equilibrium among themselves so as to guarantee constant performance for the whole life of the tyre in terms of reduction in harmful emissions, lowering noise levels, operating economy, shorter braking distances and handling.  P7 is constructed entirely of materials without highly aromatic oils, ensuring an overall reduction in consumption of up to more than 4% and lowering acoustic emissions by 30%, while on the safety front it offers better braking performance in both the wet and dry by 2 and 1 metres respectively.

In line with ‘green performance’, the Pirelli Group slogan for the next three years, Cinturato P7 is ecology applied to the whole chain, from research to the end product and still more.

On the occasion of the introduction of the P7, Pirelli is launching in Italy a campaign for the ‘scrapping’ of tyres with a totally auto-financed initiative that envisages a contribution in the acquisition of fuel for motorists who decide to replace their tyres with eco-compatible products.

In addition, the Salento launch is an Impatto Zero® event, the project of LifeGate that actuates the intentions of the Kyoto Agreement. All the carbon dioxide emissions generated by the static and dynamic presentation activity of the Cinturato P7 will be compensated for with the creation and protection of a new forest of 56,000 square metres in the reserve of Amistad Caribe in Costa Rica, the country with the highest percentage of bio-diversity in the world, which has already adopted courageous environmental policies to hold back deforestation.
Cinturato P7 will be available in the replacement market from May. Meanwhile, the logo of th new product was “fielded” on Sunday 5 April at Udine, Italy, on the shirts of the black-and-blues in the Udinese-Inter football match.
