Pirelli ST:01 BASE™ is born

Our new truck tyre for trailers and semi-trailers

The range of tyres for the medium and long range transport segment has been completed with a new cover that exalts safety and minimises management costs as a result of its energy efficiency, high mileage, remouldability, reduced noise level and use of innovative materials. With the ST:01 Base™, Pirelli continues to enrich its offer of products for commercial vehicles with a new tyre that joins the other two trailer and semi-trailer products already in the catalogue, ST:01 Neverending™ and the Formula Trailer™. In particular, the ST:01 Neverending™ is the first Pirelli product to have been judged double A class by the European Label for rolling resistance and wet grip, and is the jewel in our crown for trailer and semi-trailer equipment, including for its remouldability. For efficient management in the rear area of the vehicle there is Formula Trailer™, which has four longitudinal tread grooves with a zigzag progression to improve transversal grip and braking performance, including in the wet.

With the new ST:01 Base™ – characterised by its innovative materials and optimisation of wear, born of a patent registered by Pirelli – we cover all the various requirement typologies of transport operators.

Pirelli Metzeler Tourance™ Next is the best balanced endurance street tyre for Motorrad

Pirelli new  Metzeler Tourance™ Next demonstrated the best balanced performance in all the conditions taken into consideration during the tests, an excellent performance on the dry combined with the excellent features which shone through in the wet and a high mileage.

For this the new Metzeler Tourance™ Next was on the top step of the podium in the street enduro tyre comparative review organised by the authoritative German magazine Motorrad which put it against the Michelin Anakee 3, Bridgestone Battle Wing 501/502, Continental TrailAttack 2, Dunlop Trailmax TR91 and Pirelli Scorpion Trail, all of them in the 110/80 R19 and 150/70 R17 sizes and mounted on six Triumph Tiger Explorer motorcycles.

The 11/2013 edition of the German magazine explains that the six tyre models were tested at two different times: first when the products were completely new and then after 4000 km in order to verify wear and mileage of both the front and the rear. Tests were also conducted on the road at high speeds (motorway and highway) and, above all, there was a test in the wet.

In particular, for the test on the dry, in order to assess the performance parameters were taken into consideration such as handling, steering precision, stability in turns, grip in leans, traction in acceleration, stability on a straight line under full load, performance with a passenger, performance in conditions at the limit and maintaining the trajectory when braking in turns.

For the testing in the wet, held on a duly irrigated track, in addition to the parameters above Motorrad also took into consideration the braking distance at a speed of 100 kph, the average travel speed and lap times, and the new Metzeler Tourance™ Next came out on top over the competition.

Pirelli “Green Sourcing” Policy

This is the Pirelli policy that regulates the Group’s purchasing, with a view to creating less impact on the environment

Here is our commitment by which to further reduce our environmental footprint. It is called our Green Sourcing Policy and it carries the signature of chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera. It is an official document that describes our purchasing policy concerning all the goods and services we acquire: the addressees of this document are not only the company’s buyers, but all of us for use at times when we find ourselves in a position of activating the supply chain for an item or service acquired from outside a company.

We wish to acquire materials, goods and services the environmental footprint of which has less impact than the market average, considering all the phases of the cycle of life, and with particular attention to end-of-life management. For this reason, we are also encouraging our suppliers to integrate our policy into their purchasing model and along their supply chain.

Eleonora Pessina, Pirelli’s sustainability officer, says, “The policy dictates the fundamental principles of green sourcing, for the realisation of which the wording of specific guidelines is explicitly requested. The latter will take advantage of metrics, where possible, through the definition of internationally recognised measurement standards and, where not possible, through the definition of internal indicators. All of this is to monitor the level of effective implementation of the Green Sourcing Policy. In particular, Pirelli is moving towards the individualisation of supply areas for which it is possible to create common environmental requisites. With regard to this project, inter-functional working groups will be created, guided by the acquisition, quality and sustainability departments, with the possibility of direct involvement of eventual suppliers’ reputable representatives”.

Pirelli’s objective is to create its Green Sourcing Policy’s guidelines by the end of 2013.
