Work has finished in Haiti: the kids have returned to school

My time for Haiti, mission accomplished. The three schools of Balladère and Anse-à-Pitre that have been rebuilt with funds donated by Pirelli and its employees are ready and the 4,000 children have returned to their desks. New classrooms and bathrooms for them, but also uniforms, books and all the scholastic materials needed to serenely begin a new school year.

United Nations High Commission for Refugees recognition for the Pirelli initiative was made by Antonio Guterrez in Washington, who said, “Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti last year, the UNHCR appealed to the international community to help address the massive needs of the displaced. The management and staff of the Pirelli Group responded to that appeal. Thanks to their contribution, three schools in northern Haiti have been rehabilitated and furnished, restoring normalcy and hope to the lives 4,000 children”.

Recognition also came for the project from Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera: “With the My Time for Haiti project and thanks to the valuable, effective partnership with the UNHCR, Pirelli and its employees have once again translated corporate global citizenship into practice. Children’s education is one of the most important values to be preserved and fostered in a reconstruction phase: a sustainable, responsible approach to enable them to build a better future”.

The inauguration ceremony at the Ecole Atenoir Furmin and the Ecole Congreganiste Marie Jeanne, filles di Marie di Balladère and Anse-à-Pitre Liceum di Anse-à-Pitre took place just before last Christmas, in line with the contents of the contract signed last July by Pirelli and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

The video was made for Pirelli in February as a ‘thank you’ to the Pirelliani who contributed to this project on behalf of all the children and the local community.
