PIRELLI EXPANDS THE “GREEN” RANGE WITH CINTURATO P1, THE PREMIUM TYRE FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED CARS

Pirelli presents Cinturato P1, the high-tech “green” tyre developed for small and medium-sized cars, which guarantees lower, performance on every surface and is environmentally friendly. The new addition to the Cinturato family was tested at its world premiere by the European media in Puglia, on a route winding through olive trees, beautiful villages and the Adriatic coast. Cinturato P1, soon to be launched also in Latin America and Asia, will be available on the European spare parts market by the end of 2011 in sizes ranging from 14” to 16” and has already been selected as original equipment by BMW.
Cinturato P1 expands Pirelli’s “green” range and includes Pirelli technology developed for its Ultra High Performance tyres: Cinturato P1 was designed according to the already successful state-of-the-art standards of Cinturato P7 and developed at Pirelli’s Research and Development center in Milan, where Formula 1 tyres are also devised.
The DNA of Cinturato P1 thus summarizes the “green” characteristics of Cinturato and Scorpion Verde, the eco-friendly tyre studied for Suvs and Crossover vehicles, and the technology studied for the P Zero family.
Safety, driving pleasure, attention to the environment and versatility are the four key characteristics of Cinturato P1, perfectly in line with new market requirements: performance seen as safety, energy efficiency and low environmental impact. Cinturato P1 is the tyre designed to comply with the coming 2012 UE Directive and label: in the first official tests, the new Pirelli tyre distinguished itself in terms of fuel savings and noise reduction, two key parameters to ensure a high “environmental score”. Thanks to its 15% lower weight and the choice of innovative technological solutions, the new Cinturato achieves a reduction in rolling resistance of up to 25%. Also in “green” terms, Cinturato P1 reduces external noise by 1,5 dB and inner noise by 1dB, improving ride comfort and driving pleasure. The P1’s eco-friendly character is matched by its high technological content: in some sizes, the new tyre is available also in the Run Flat version, which provides continual mobility.
The new Cinturato reinforces Pirelli’s “Green Performance” strategy – “green” products accounted for 36% of sales in 2010 – and accounted for 27% of the total sales worldwide. This makes the Cinturato eco-friendly range the Group’s most important and one that is destined to grow, in line with the expected growth of the “Green Performance”.

SUSTAINABILITY: AN EXAMPLE FOR THE SECTOR

For the fourth consecutive year, Pirelli has been declared the ‘Autoparts and Tyres’ sector leader in sustainability at a world level and a Gold Class Company in the prestigious 2011 Sustainability Yearbook published by the SAM Group in collaboration with Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

The SAM Group is a Swiss asset management company in Switzerland, focused on sustainable and responsible investment for the evaluation used for admission to the Dow Jones sustainability indices.

Their Sustainability Yearbook http://www.sam-group.com/htmle/yearbook/ is one of the most complete and authoritative reference instruments for sustainability finance operators. It only includes the world’s top sustainability-scoring companies, amounting to 15% of those companies belonging to no fewer than 58 sectors assessed by the SAM Group within the Dow Jones Sustainability Assessment.

Satisfaction for this prestigious recognition comes from Filippo Bettini, Pirelli’s director of sustainability and risk management, who gave an interview to the Italian Stock Exchange site headed ‘Pirelli: CSR applied to tyres’.

Pirelli confirmed world leader in Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for the fourth year in a row

For the fourth year in a row, Pirelli was confirmed world leader in the Autoparts and Tires sector in the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe and Dow Jones Sustainability World indexes.

For the second year in a row, Pirelli was also the only Italian company to be ranked as world leader in its sector.

The 2010 review was carried out by SAM Group, the Swiss asset management group in charge of the assessment and selection process for admission to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes. Criteria include corporate governance, risk management, codes of conduct, brand management and innovation processes. On the environmental front, SAM looks at reporting, environmental policies, procedures and systems, responsible product management, climate change and emissions reduction strategy and energy efficiency. There are also social criteria: development and management of human resources, philanthropy, health and safety in the workplace, supply chain management and stakeholder engagement.

'Safe&Go': THE SUMMER SAFETY CAMPAIGN BEGINS

The Pirelli, ‘Autostrade per l’Italia’ and ‘Telepass’ presented on 16 June 2010 the summer highway safety campaign, “Safe&Go“, with Italy’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport.
The prevention and awareness campaign is aimed at all drivers who use the Autostrade per l’Italia network with the objective of making the holiday period safer for everyone. The project will begin on the weekend of 19-20 June and end on the weekend of 28-29 August.
During the weekends of the campaign, specialized technicians will offer complete tyre check-ups free of charge at Pirelli check points located at key points in the Autostrade per l’Italia network, checking pressure and evaluating wear on the outside of the tyres, as well as measuring remaining tread. Check-ups will be completed with the presentation of a certificate that indicates the tyre’s overall condition. Additionally, drivers will receive informational material regarding proper tyre maintenance and they will also receive instruction in the use of a thickness gauge. This tool, which will be given free to every driver, can be used to check the remaining tread level without needing to visit a mechanic. By law, tyre tread must be greater than 1.6 millimetres.
Tyre quality and proper tyre maintenance are two of the most important elements in terms of preventing highway accidents. As numerous field tests have shown, not enough attention is paid to tyres. According to a recent study carried out by Federpneus and Assogomma with the assistance of the Highway Police, over 50% of Italians travel with under-inflated tyres or tyres that are worn or damaged or even not approved for use.
This project also includes an incentive campaign totally financed by Pirelli. These incentives call for a contribution of up to Euro 170 for those who to decide to replace their worn or unsuitable tyres with new Pirelli tyres by 14 August 2010. In fact, the safety incentive also provides for an additional Euro 100 discount on successive purchases (by 31 May 2011) of a train of tyres and the additional possibility to gain up to Euro 70 in highway toll bonuses for those that have Telepass Premium.
All over the world, the name Pirelli is synonymous with high performance and safety. Highway safety and environmental protection make up the key elements of the Green Performance strategy, the foundation for the Group’s industrial and commercial decisions. Pirelli’s efforts in terms of highway safety include numerous training and informational projects, but are especially focused on continuous research and application of innovative technological solutions that support sustainable mobility.

Sustainable finance and value creation: Pirelli at the forefront at the Borsa Italiana/London Stock Exchange Seminar

“Business sustainability and responsible investments to create long term value” is the title of a seminar organised by the Academy-London Exchange Group, sponsored by Pirelli and in which Pirelli took part as Speaker. Group chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera illustrated the results obtained so far in terms of sustainability and the objectives set in the 2009-2011 plan to the audience of financial analysts, investors and rating society experts gathered in the headquarters of Borsa Italiana, the Italian stock exchange.

In particular, after the growth of the green revenue component from 20 to 25% of turnover achieved in 2008 and 2009, the target for the current year is 33%, aimed at achieving the objective of 40% in 2011. Achievements that were also due to new green performance products such as the Cinturato P7 and the Scorpion Verde. He reminded his audience that, for Pirelli, sustainability is not just respecting the environment, but a new management model that is an integral part of the growth strategy for the Group: this is the best way of managing the economic, social and environmental impacts related to processes, products and services inspired by the principles of the United Nations’ Global Compact, respecting shared policy values, according to the most advanced management systems.

Speakers at the event, opened by Angelo Tantazzi, Chairman of Borsa Italiana and by Paul Druckman, Chairman of Access Technology Group – The Prince’s Accounting for Sustainability Project, were also Giuseppe Van Der Helm, Chairman of Eurosif, and Gian Francesco Imperiali, Chairman of ABB.

PIRELLI CONFIRMED IN FTSE4GOOD INDEXES

Following the recent half-yearly revision, Pirelli has been re-confirmed as part of FTSE Global and FTSE4Good Europe. 23 new companies became part of the Financial Times indexes for socially responsible investment , while five have been excluded.

GREEN PERFORMANCE, THE CHALLENGE OF 'SCORPION VERDE'

Pirelli launches ‘Scorpion Verde’, the first ecological high performance tyre for SUVs and Crossovers, which is part of the company’s ‘Green Performance’ strategy.
Last 15 March in Barcellona Pirelli presented presented to the press and to 400 dealers from all over Europe and Japan the first tyre for high environmental impact vehicles, which embodies respect for the environment, savings, better breaking capability, grip and driving pleasure without giving up performance.
Scorpion Verde ensures an overall reduction in fuel consumption of up to 3.9% on urban roads and 3.4% on mixed routes (urban and extra-urban) and reduces acoustic emissions by a decibel, which is equal to 30% overall (that is like cancelling an entire lane of a three-lane motorway) and uses 10% less raw materials.
In addition to the powerful ecological vocation, Scorpion Verde guarantees high performance: improvement in braking, better wet grip and handling.
Scorpion Verde will be available on the replacement market from April 2010. Among the latest generation SUVs and Crossovers, Volkswagen’s Touareg has already chosen Scorpion Verde.

SPAIN: CINTURATO P7 TYRE OF THE YEAR

Cinturato P7, the first ecological tyre for high performance vehicles launched by Pirelli last April, has won the title 2010 Tyre of the Year in Spain. The decision was made by an award jury organised by the magazine Neumáticos y Mecánica Rápida composed of specialists, distributors and specialised journalists who elected it the winner, preferring it to another eight candidates made by the most prestigious brands on the market.
“Cinturato P7 embodies the new spirit of Pirelli”, declared the general director of Pirelli Spain and Portugal. “A spirit in which performance and respect for the environment have the same importance, which marks a change in our brand positioning and our way of seeing the business. This award, which for us is a very important recognition of the quality of our product, strengthens our conviction that the direction we have taken the right one”.

SUSTAINABILITY: PIRELLI ENTERS THE ECPI ETHICAL FINANCE INDEX

Since December, Pirelli & C. has been in the ethical finance index ECPI Ethical Index EMU, the classification by E. Capital Partners (ECPI), the rating company leader in socially responsible investments (SRI).
The index includes the 150 companies of greater capitalisation of the EMU market (Economic and Monetary Union), who have been found to be leaders of sustainability as a result of the screening, conducted in line with the parameters of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance), for the assessment of environmental risk, social impact and Corporate Governance structure.
Subjected to the screening, Pirelli was inserted in the ECPI Ethical Index EMU as well as in the investable universe of the ECPI Ethical Index Global and the ECPI Ethical Index Euro.
