‘Mythology’: the new Cal
“Mythology”, the 2011 Pirelli calendar, was presented today at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre in Moscow. The 37th edition of the ‘The Cal’ has been produced by the creative genius Karl Lagerfeld, artist and aesthete, who is acclaimed throughout the world.
‘Mythology’ reflects one of Lagerfeld’s most deep-rooted passions for the legends and myths of Greco-Roman mythology, for the story of the origin of man and the world through the adventures of gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines. In a journey back in time via the universal language of photography, ‘Mythology’ takes us back to the roots of classic civilisation and reconciles the Pirelli calendar with the Old Continent, where the company was established almost 140 years ago and became a multinational with a presence in more than 160 countries across the world.
In the 36 pictures that comprise the 2011 calendar, the 21 protagonists comprising 15 female and five male models plus, American actress Julianne Moore, portray 24 themes, among them divinity, heroes and myths. All of the photographs are in black and white, to give character to the images and to underline the beauty of the bodies through the strong chromatic contrast. Lagerfeld’s eye offers ‘sculptured’ pictures, both from the points of view of aesthetic rigour and continuous appeal of the art of sculpture and his classic precepts.
